Topic: Rights & Responsibilities in relation to Racial Discrimination or Harassment or accusations of such conduct in your role as a Teacher
Description: This workshop will discuss situations that may arise involving Members being accused of racial discrimination or harassment or of failing to address such conduct by others, and/or situations where Members themselves are the target of such conduct. We will discuss Members’ professional rights and responsibilities, and potential consequences to being accused of racism and/or of failing to address racism in their role as teachers, as well as their rights where they are the target of racist conduct, with attention to the various relationships in which these situations can arise (e.g., teacher-administrator; teacher-parent; teacher-student; student-student; teacher-teacher or other staff member) and to the best practices, policies and/or laws that may apply.
Bio:
Patricia is a managing partner at Cavalluzzo LLP. She is a graduate of the University of Toronto and McGill University, and was called to the Bar in 1997. She represents unions and their members, and also non-unionized individuals. She has extensive experience providing representation in the education sector; as well as representing workers in the media sector. Patricia advises and represents on a wide range of workplace issues, including human rights & accommodation, workplace investigations, misconduct allegations, professional discipline, and general collective agreement matters. She also provides instruction on a variety of legal topics, including professionalism and professional boundary issues, investigations, and human rights.
