The Education Act sets out the duties and responsibilities of teachers (and principals) in Ontario. Every school/site should have a copy of the Education Act which is usually kept in the office. The most used parts of the Act outlining the duties of teachers are Section 264 and Regulation 298. Your Collective Agreement further outlines your rights and responsibilities as a teacher. In addition, it more clearly determines many of your working conditions. Please ensure that you have a copy and refer to it often. It is the responsibility of the employer to provide you with a copy of the Agreement.
Each member of ETT pays a fee to be a member of ETFO. 1.6% of your annual salary is deducted from your pay cheque and sent to ETFO. ETFO retains most of the fees to provide protective and professional services. It also pays for membership in EI (Educational International), CTF, OTF, CLC, and OFL, and funds QECO services. ETFO returns a portion of the members’ fees to ETT. ETT’s budget is approved each spring at the Annual Meeting by a vote of the members present. Budget documents are available from the Union.
Permanent Teacher: once you have completed one full year of successful teaching you are considered a permanent teacher.
Full-time Teacher: a teacher who is employed by the board on a regular basis for full-time duty.
Part-time Teacher: a teacher who is employed by the Board on a regular basis for other than full-time duty (usually half day).
Preparation time is a working condition that was attained in 1987 through collective bargaining.
Currently, the contract provides for 480 minutes of prep time per ten-day cycle free from classroom instruction and supervision. More commonly, this is scheduled as 240 minutes per five-day cycle. Prep time is yours to use as you determine for professional activities.
The contract ensures that prep time must be scheduled in blocks of at least 20 consecutive minutes, with the objective of scheduling blocks of 30 minutes or more. In an emergency, your principal may reschedule your prep time but it must be made up within 15 school days (refer to Section L – D.15.0. of the Collective Agreement).
Please refer to the Salary Grid for 2014-2019 or to Section L – B.2.2. of the Collective Agreement.
Supervision schedules should be determined by your School Staffing Committee in consultation with the staff.
The Collective Agreement, under Section L-D.7.0., details the make-up and role of the School Staffing Committee including a description of the committee’s responsibilities regarding the “equitable distribution of non-instructional periods including supervision, preparation time and instructional periods.”
No teacher shall be required to perform in excess of 80 minutes of supervision duties per 5 day schedule. Many schools safely operate under 80 minutes per week as determined by the school staffing committee based on “superior benefits” as negotiated in the previous round of collective bargaining. (Refer to Section L – D.17.0. of the Collective Agreement).
Centrally Assigned members, including Special Education consultants and coordinators; Learning, Literacy, and Early Years coaches; Itinerant teachers; Outdoor Education teachers; and Section 23 teachers, are supported by the ETT Table Officers.
