Topic: MIND YOUR MENTAL HEALTH: USING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND RESILIENCE TO ADDRESS WORKPLACE BURNOUT
Description: Burnout is a pervasive form of stress that is tied to work, and the instances of workforce burnout are on the rise. Burnout leaves employees feeling overwhelmed, and leads to disengagement, reduced productivity, increased turnover, and mental health challenges. Risk factors involved in burnout includes excessive workload and/or scarce resources, high-conflict teams and a limited sense of community, implicit bias, racism, and ineffective leadership. Understanding how to effectively address burnout is critical to overall wellbeing. This workshop promotes Emotional Intelligence (EI) as a way to build resilience and effectively address burnout. EI is the ability to be aware of your own feelings and to understand those of others, manage your feelings, and use your understanding of emotions to increase resilience. This workshop/ training is tailored to address the unique challenges faced by educators that leads to burnout, such as high-stress environments, student issues, implicit bias, racism, and leadership challenges.
What Will Participants Learn?
Factors that create burnout in the workplace and how those factors creates an unhealthy work environment.
How to use EI to have psychologically safe conversations with peers and leadership to address issues related to burnout and mental wellness.
The role personality temperament plays in effectively dealing with change, conflict, team dynamics, implicit bias and racism, all which can contribute to burnout and impact wellbeing and mental health.
How to use EI to increase Personal Competence (Self-Management and Self-Awareness), and Social Competence (Social Awareness and Relationship Management), which will enhance their ability to address and deal with issues that leads to burnout.
Bio:
Dr. George Parris has his Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Counselling, with cognates in Counselling Psychology and Organizational Development from Michigan State University. He is licensed as a Counsellor in the State of Michigan and is a Nationally Certified Psychologist. He is also a Senior Disability Analyst and Diplomate of the American Board of Disability Analyst. He is certified as a Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) trainer, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) trainer, and Trauma Informed Care (TIC) trainer.
George has been providing training to organizations for over 25 years and has presented at more than 50 national and international conferences. George served as the Coordinator and Professor for the Masters of Arts and Ph.D. programs in Rehabilitation Counsellor Education at Wayne State University for 20 years.
