The ETFO LGBTQ Education Timeline is an educational resource developed with The ArQuives (formerly CLGA) to provide a historical overview of significant milestones in 2SLGBTQIA+ education. Released in 2016, the timeline includes an accompanying booklet and is available online for educators to use with students to learn about 2SLGBTQIA+ history and create safer, more inclusive classrooms. The timeline is a key resource in ETFO’s ongoing commitment to promoting 2SLGBTQIA+ equity, and it is part of the larger effort to embed this education throughout the curriculum and school policies.
Key aspects of the timeline
- Purpose: The timeline is intended to help educators and students understand the historical context of 2SLGBTQIA+ issues in education, fostering awareness and creating more inclusive learning environments.
- Development: It was created through a collaboration between the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and The ArQuives (formerly the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives).
- Content: The resource highlights important historical milestones and events related to 2SLGBTQIA+ education.
- Accessibility: While a limited number of print copies were made, the timeline is available online on both the ETFO’s website and The ArQuives’ website.
How it’s used
- Classroom resource: Educators can use the timeline as a teaching tool to learn about 2SLGBTQIA+ history with their students.
- Professional development: The resource helps increase educators’ own awareness and understanding of the history and issues surrounding 2SLGBTQIA+ topics.
- Part of a larger strategy: The timeline is one part of a broader initiative by ETFO to provide professional development and learning materials that support 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion in schools.
