Memo From ETT President Jennifer Brown: Section 22 Order to Close TDSB Schools in Best Interest of Well-being of Students and Educators

In declaring a Section 22 order to close TDSB schools, Toronto Public Health has acted in the best interest of our students and educators, protecting their health and well-being.

Over the last several weeks I have worked closely with OSSTF District 12, ETFO Toronto Occasional Teachers, CUPE 4400, and the other Toronto education affiliates to raise awareness of the issues facing our members and to advocate for the health and safety of all education workers on the frontlines.

I believe that it was our advocacy, and, in particular, the sustained and intensive lobbying of Interim Director of Education Karen Falconer, Mayor John Tory, and Medical Officer of Health for the City of Toronto Dr. Eileen de Villa, that yielded this positive decision for our members.

We hear the urgency of the situation and you have my commitment that I will continue to work with everyone to engage in the critical advocacy that our members need.

We know that remote teaching and learning is challenging for our members, especially for those with children, but the health and safety of educators and students is paramount.

Please stay safe and take care of yourselves.

Yours in solidarity,

Jennifer Brown
ETT President
