The Toronto East Residents for Renewable Energy (TERRE) invites ETT Members to join their Portlands Gas Plant Action during Doors Open Toronto this weekend.
Event Details:
- Saturday, May 25, 2024
- 12 pm – 2 pm
- Portlands Energy Centre
Despite being Toronto’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases and nitrogen oxides, Portlands Energy Centre (PEC) is being showcased on Saturday, May 25 during Doors Open Toronto (DOT), an annual City of Toronto event which invites the public to visit buildings with architectural, historical, cultural, and social significance. This year’s theme is “hidden histories” and participants are invited to “uncover untold stories from across the city.” In the midst of a climate crisis, the Toronto East Residents for Renewable Energy (TERRE) coalition insists that it’s inappropriate that PEC is being celebrated in this way.
ETT Members are invited to join TERRE and coalition groups on Saturday May 25 between 12-2pm outside the entrance to PECs DOT event to share the full story of PEC’s climate and human health impacts and our message of the need to phase out the gas plant and rapidly power up renewables. You are invited to join and participate by holding up a sign (we will have signs and sign-making materials available), sharing info sheets with members of the public who are attending DOT, or by going on a tour of the plant and asking questions about community health and the climate crisis to representatives of Atura Power and the Independent Electricity System Operator.
The entrance to PEC’s DOT event is indicated on the map below. Please consider taking public transit (#83 Jones Bus from Donlands Station stops at the corner of Leslie and Commissioners and the entrance to PEC DOT is about a 10-12 minute walk from there), cycling, or car pooling (there will be limited parking along Unwin Avenue and in the lot off the roadway leading to the Outer Harbour Marina due south of PEC).
