Voices From the Classroom
Public education has many stakeholders and a variety of perspectives emerge on most issues. However, it is rare that classroom teachers have the opportunity to offer their unvarnished point of view and tell their stories of how Toronto’s public schools work, and how they can work better. The purpose of this project was to explore the issues, trends, stresses and challenges confronting elementary teachers, and to allow them to voice their concerns.
The findings of this report offer insight into many of the issues that dominate current public discussion. Teachers’ descriptions of their working conditions, shortages of specialist support and the daily contest to access resources provide context and detail to the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario’s (ETFO) campaign to close the funding gap between the elementary and secondary levels.
