Expressions in Solidarity: Freedoms Challenged

Michelle Matin

“Admittedly, this picture was taken during the student protest in the summer of 2011, Montreal. The police have lined up to the corners, restricting movement of the demonstrators. In some cases, the people were beaten and arrested for exercising their democratic right.

This may have proceeded our current, “Collective Agreement,” but I will suggest that this has overtures in the decaying of our democratic society as a whole. The right to protest, to negotiate, to speak, are what makes us uniquely Canadian. These freedoms are being challenged not just in Toronto, but across Canada.”
